Dietro lo pseudonimo irr. app. (ext.) si cela Matthew Waldron, statunitense, con un passato musicale di oltre un decennio, che inizia con la militanza nei Vacum Tree Head e prosegue con numerose collaborazioni fra cui gli islandesi Stilluppsteypa e Nurse With Wound. Nonostante la lunga storia alle spalle, soltanto due lavori escono ufficialmente: “Dust Pincher Appliances” (Crouton, 2003) e “An Uncertain Animal, Ruptured; Tissue Expanding in Conversation” (FIRE inc. 1997) mentre parecchi lavori finiti rimangono inediti o stampati in pochissime copie in cd-r. |
A particularly uninteresting variety of slime mold (Myxomycota) originally manifesting in southern Ontario, the irr.app. (ext.) plasmodium was eventually transferred to northern California, where the more aggressive climate instigated a correspondingly more aggressive quality to its heterotrophic function in the surrounding ecosystem. One of several peculiar side effects that accompanied this deviation is the tendency of the organism’s fructifying sporangia to emit an irregular stream of unpleasant noises, a behaviour usually accompanied by a strong odour comparable in quality to that of decomposing Belgian waffles. As has been the case with all of nature’s more grotesque manifestations, an interest in these noises has developed amongst a certain small, disreputable segment of the world’s population. As improbable it may seem, however, in recent years irr. app. (ext.) cultures and their attendant properties have been given constructive, widely-beneficial application by well-regarded scientific institutions such as The Society of Wounded Nurses at Cooloorta (SOWNAC), Iceland’s Stilluppsteypa Foundation for Homeopathic Agoraphobics (SFFHA), and, of course, The Helen Scarsdale Agency, a San Francisco-based group commited to improving conditions for non-native slime molds residing in the Bay Area. | |||||
