Segal drew the best dog for an assignment in first grade. Other kids wanted him to do their drawing. They passed their assignments to him. He drew about four dogs for four other kids when he understood three things: his talent, the pleasure of attention and that people will take advantage of you. He enjoys these things today. Some noteriety has come Segal's way for his relentless marker/postcard work that he has honed on and off since 1987 to the present. He has had about 5 notable and successful postcard shows, many of his very affordable pieces (10.00 usually) are recounted to him by visitors to patrons houses ("I saw one of your postcards in _________'s bathroom!"). Segal also paints: on canvas or Masonite™ –– often commissioned. As well as being a published illustrator (Bikini, Raygun, Clear), he is involved in various ongoing graphic interests. He has helped shape the look of the Ghostly International label and is an astute poster artist for Detroit and national music concerts.Though he admits to no direct influence he is definitely a child of the cathode age –– Flintstones, Gilligan's Island and Peanuts definitely come into play if only for color use and revenge for the mind-poisoning. The history of fine arts being so vast, random and subjective, Segal (degreed in Fine Arts) can only say (when pressed for influences): "Quickly, Dubuffet, Klimt, Ellsworth Kelly and many things I don't know yet." He is now working on a body of work to be included in a future retrospective showing. He lives in the Detroit area and wants to indirectly help the community. | ||||||
